A TIME capsule film of community life in St Clears during the past century is to be shown at the town's Ysgol Griffith Jones school.

It follows the launch of a book written by retired midwife Stella Griffiths about her late father, the renowned local photographer Stanley Phillips.

Photographs in the book, entitled Lluniau gan Stanley Phillips MIBP 1892-1965, document life in St Clears from 1910. Many historic moments were captured on film, including unseen images of Parry Thomas and the famous racing car Babs.

During her research, Stella discovered canned film dating back to the early 1920s, documenting local life as well as a world land speed record attempt at Pendine sands by Sir Malcolm Campbell in the Bluebird racing car.

The book launch was held at the Studio Gallery, in St Clears, last month, where guests were treated to the world premiere of the film and enjoyed a slideshow of images from the book.

The launch of the book was an emotional time for Stella and her family — and not just because they finally saw Stanley Phillips's pictures in print.

Around the time of the launch, Stella's 93-year-old brother-in-law, Mansel Lewis, underwent a successful operation to regain his sight at Glangwili Hospital.

Mr Lewis lost an eye in an explosion during the Second World War, and had not been able to read for at least 15 years.

Deterioration of his sight in the past five years meant that he had not seen his grand-daughter, Lara, growing up.

It was a very emotional moment for all concerned when he opened his eyes and saw his family for the first time in years.

A free public screening takes place on Sunday at Ysgol Griffith Jones school, St Clears, starting at 7.30pm.

A DVD of the film footage is also available.
